Guide to the Westminster College student handbooks

The collection materials, dating from 1946-2004, consist of student handbooks of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. They are intended to inform students of campus services and policies. Between 1996-2005 the handbooks included weekly academic calendar pages listing student and campus events. Since 2005, the student handbooks have been made available on the Westminster College Student Life webpage and the academic calendar is on the Registrar's Office webpage.

The names of the student government bodies and student services office have changed over the years. Authorship of the annual student handbooks reflects the changes as they were prepared and issued either by the student association or by the student services office(r) at the time, and jointly in some school years.

The students' handbook of 1946 was intended for both men and women. The handbooks of the 1940s and 1950s contain information on campus activities, buildings, student government, the athletic board of control, student publications, awards and amendments. These handbooks state clearly that fraternities and sororities are forbidden on campus.

From 1946-1950, the handbooks were published by the Westminster College Student Association.

The handbooks of the late 1960s and 1970s were divided into sections. The information in each section was organized in the following five sections: statement of student's rights and responsibilities, student's record policy, general information on the college and academics, rules and regulations, and college disciplinary board. At the back of the handbook information on motor vehicles, bicycles, and traffic regulations in included.

The 1970-1971 handbook was "prepared … by the Student Government Association in conjunction with the Office of Student Affairs". The 1973-1974 and 1974-1975 handbooks inverted the statement to read "prepared … by the Office of Student Affairs with the Student Government Association".

The format of the handbooks changed in the 1980s; they are larger, the cover more colorful, and photographs are included. The content of the handbooks remained basically unchanged except the information was no longer arranged into separate sections.

The 1982-1983 handbook had no statement of authorship, but the Executive Cabinet of the Associated Students of Westminster College (ASWC) appears for the first time, and there is mention of the Dean of Students Office.

The handbooks from 1986-1987 through the 1992-1994 school years attributed authorship to a "joint effort between the Associated Students and the Student Services Staff", with a "Welcome" statement from Gary D. Fitzer, Dean of Students (and in some later issues listed as Assistant Vice-President for Enrollment Management and Dean of Students). In the school years 1994-1995 and 1995-1996, there is a "Greetings" statement from Sheryl J. Phillips, Vice-President for Student Services.

Beginning with the 1996-1997 school year, and continuing through the 2004-2005 year, the handbook was issued in spiral bound format and included a weekly academic calendar. The title was expanded to "Westminster Student Handbook and A.S.W.C. Events Calendar".

The 1997-1998 handbook has a "Welcome" statement from Susan D. Heath, Dean of Students. In the years between 1998-2002, a "President's Welcome" statement appears from Peggy A. Stock.

The 2002-2004 student handbooks have a "President's Welcome" from Michael S. Bassis, and a "Dean of Students' Message" from Carolyn Perkins. The final hard-copy handbook, issued for the 2004-2005 school year, has a welcome from President Bassis, and an "Associate Provost's Message" from Susan Heath, Interim Associate Provost for Student Development

In 2005, the student handbook was made available electronically on the college website.

Gaps in the collection: Student handbooks are lacking for the years 1964-1967, 1968-1969, 1978-1979, 1980-1982, and 1983-1986.
