All this brought a heavy burden at the very end of the year, but leaves us with a larger welcome in the hearts of the people of the surrounding villages and of the city than ever before. Medical Even before the battle was over, the Hospital was sending cut parties of stretcher bearers, volunteers from the faculty and students of Porter Middle School and others, to bring in the wounded. Of these about twenty were civilians from neighboring villages, with 150 soldiers of all armies, and even some bandits. The largest ward in the women's hospital was turned over to wounded men? young women in training as nurses, who had never been asked to attended men before, rose to the occasion wonderfully? there were several major operations every day? surgeons and nurses were pushed to the limit of endurance? still the morgue could not be kept empty and we had funerals of several soldiers of two armies buried together in a common grave in the public cemetery outside of the gate. In this emergency we were helped by the loan of a surgeon and several nurses from Lintsing, Quick passage between the two stations was made possible only because the auto-bus company operating between these two cities had saved its cars from confiscation and helped us by giving U3 the use of the cars during the time of disturbance.
