Above this is a wide grassy moorland to 4,000 fe-t, where the forest commences. The summit of the mountain consists of a series of peaks surrounding the crater, which is about 2,000 feet in diameter. Fuji stands by itself, rising with one majestic sweep from a plain almost surrounded with mountains. The circuit of Fuji-half way up-is a favorite place with the native lovers of the picturesque. It commands a splendid panoramic view over the country in the immediate vicinity. Painters and poets find much to admire in the union of grace and majesty which Fuji presents. The shortest way of reaching Fuji from Yokoharrfa is to go by railroad as far as Gotemba, where guides and horses can be procured.
