Title |
Oral history interview with Gary Belovsky, conducted by Becky B. Lloyd (audio and transcript) |
Description |
In this interview, Gary Belovsky discusses his background and involvement in developing regulations on brine shrimp harvesting in the Great Salt Lake. Belovsky studied Notre Dame, Yale University (Forestry - Ecology) and Harvard University (Organismic Biology - Zoology). Belovsky held faculty positions at University of Michigan, Utah State University, and Notre Dame University. Belosky was hired by the state of Utah in the 1990s to study brine shrimp in the Great Salt Lake. Belovsky developed a model to regulate brine shrimp harvesting in the Great Salt Lake in order to prevent over or under harvesting. The model Belovsky developed would maintain optimal brine shrimp levels necessary for future harvests. This model doesn't set static harvesting limits, but focuses on maintaining certain shrimp levels in the lake. This was very contentious with brine shrimp fisherman. Belovsky speaks about the importance of the Great Salt Lake and it's future amidst population growth and climate change. |
