Show CERTl1'lED SKJ TEACHER INTERMOUNTAIN SKI ASSOCIATION INTERMOUNTAIN SKI INSTRUCT'ORS ASSOCI,ATION MINUTES GENERAL MEMBERSHIP ANNUAL MEETING - 4/18/64 Peruvian Lodge, Alta, Utah President Anderson called this meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. No roll call was made because of the previous Special Meeting. President Anderson discussed the work done by the Board and officers during the past year. He discussed our Honorary member, Claude Jones and his work with the National Forest Recreation Association, to which he represents the ISlA, and his work with the U.S. Forest Service and Area Operators. Woody mentioned also that he expected next year's growth of skiing in the U.S. is a good 40% over this year, The ISlA now has well over 200 members and is growing fast, President Anderson then advised the membership that some move was trying to get off the ground to set up a separate Ski School Director's Organization and its possible ill effects on the good relations now present in the ISlA between Directors and Instructors, Such an organization possibly could foster labor-management problems such as exist with many union management relations now, He announced that our dues were to remain the same and that an effort will be made to get all of the ski schools to donate a little money to help run the ISlA. The Association is a benefit to ski school directors, most of whom are also active members. The President proposed that our large Board of Directors be replaced by an Executive Committee as the work horse to get things done without loading such a hardship on so many Directors. Motion made (Price-Abersold) that the President's report be accepted. Carried unanimously. Vice President Keith Lange then gave his report. Motion made (RhinehartSimpson) that the V.P. report be accepted. Carried unanimously. J. R, "Bob" Smith gave the Treasurer's report, Motion made (Lange-Rhinehart) that Treasurer's report be accepted. Carried Unanimously, Lloyd Frank gave the Secretary's report, He noted that each member now has a registered certification number which he can use when filling application forms for equipment9 etc. Each member's number will appEar on his identification card. He again requests that address changes be promptly sent to him, and thanked the membership for the many friendly notes sent him. Motion made (Rhinehart-Adams) that Secretary's report be accepted. Carried unanimously. Lou Lorenz gave the Certification Committee Report, Results of examinations for certification of Ski Instructors during the 1963-64 season, Interest in certification exmination this season has exceeded any prior year in the history of the ISlA, One hundred and six candidates attempted the examination. Ed Morris, Wally Abersold, Keith Lange, N. D. Andersen and Jay Price are outgoing directors. President Anderson opened nominations from the floor. Eugene Huber) Bob J. R. Ballots were made and collected by the Committee for tabulation. Bill Lash reported on the PSIA. He read a magazine report on the American Technique and discussed counter rotation, the Hart ski movie and the new American Technique book. He also discussed the PSIA demonstration team to Europe. He showed - October 17. 1964 Report of the Chairman of Certification Committee to the Board of Directors ISlA Since the last Board of Director's meeting there have been no ISlA Certification Examinations o Of the 47 candidates passing for Associate Instructor during 1963-64 the conmlittee is still holding two for lack of first aid card. The committee has approved excuses for their delayo The committee nullified one candidate's exam for failure to submit written phase of the exam. Motion made (Zeigler-Rhinehart that this motion be tabled. Carried. A general discussion reached the floor regarding registration, certification, the Use Permit, ski school directors and our relative position and our problems with same. Motion made (Voorhees-Parkinson) that the problem of relations of Certification with the U,S, Forest Service be left up to the Certification Committee and that this be studied either by the Executive Committee or BOD before being presented to the General Membership. Carried unanimously. Motion (Voorhees-Lorenz) that the ISlA send letters with invoices for money donations to all ski school directors. Motion carried unanimously. Some money has already been received from some ski schools. A ski school directors meeting is scheduled for noon Saturday, 4/18/64. Motion (Parkinson-Price) that we have an "honorary" membership to Father Kern of Ogden for his faithful interest in ski teaching. Motion carried unanimously. NEW BUSINESS Don Rhinehart discussed the Fall Sun Valley symposium and how much the Sun Valley instructors appreciate the ISlA approval and sanction for credit. It was pointed out that Sun Valley has a problem in taking care of its own personnel and cannot handle a lot more instructors, Sigi Engl would like a representative from the ISlA to attend though, to observe the symposium. Motion (Voorhees-Zeigler) that meeting adjourn. Meeting closed at 11:45 P,M, --------------- CERTIFIED SKI TEACHER I NTERMOUNTAJN SKI ASSOCIATION INTERMOUNTAIN SKI INSTRUCTORS ASSOCIATION MINUTES SPECIAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING - 4/18/64 Peruvian Lodge. A1 ta, Utah President Anderson called this special meeting for the purpose of taking up the appeal made by Reggy Ve.rnet on November 30. 1963 for consideration of his dismissal from membership in the Association. His membership was cancelled by the Board of Directors under Section V (c) of the Articles of Incorporation. President Anderson called the meeting to order at 5:05 P.M. Roll was called and those present or absent duly recorded, The President asked for a reading of the minutes of the last General Meeting. Before this could start, a motion was made (Lash-Rhinehart) that these minutes be approved as mailed. Motion carried unanimously, President Anderson then read to the membership a letter dated October 18, 1963 from the ISlA to Reggy VerneL The President also read Section V of the Articles of Incorporation to familiarize the members with it and its purposes. The President then called for a discussion from the floor and an oplnlon from the membership. A motion was made (Lash-Thurgood) that the membership sustain the action of its directors. Members then took the floor and the opinions presented were somewhat unsure. Reggy has made an effort for retribution. The vote was called for and the Board overrul1ed 74 to 44. A motion was made (Staley-Burnham) that the Board have a meeting with Reggy present to review his case. Motion carried unanimously. A motion was made (Zeig1erPrice) that the special meeting be closed. Motion carried and meeting ended at 5~50 P.M. -3- student rating cards used by the French and the Italians. These. cards are like the PSIA student rating cards and it is evident that a student can not only go from school to school in the U, S,A,. but can now follow up American rated instruction in some European schools. The President introduced John Herbert and Jerry Horton of the U 0 S, Fores t Service, Mr. Herbert discussed the 300% increase in skiing noticed on National Forest Areas 0 ski equipment" lifts, etc ~ on Forest Service land is now big business. NEW BUSINESS Tim Heydon invited the I.SIA to hOld its next convention in Park City. He noted that their ski school next year will operate under co-directorship of Jim McConkey and Woody Anderson and invited any instructor interested in teaching there to contact them. John Harrington invited the ISlA to hold its next convention at the Jackson Hole ski area, Sue Peterson discussed the Ski School Directors Association. She assured the members that at no time did they intend to break away from the ISlA. Bill Ashley arose to verify this. Bill then spoke in behalf of K. Smith and said that Ko should be given another opportuni to become a member. He indicated that K, was notl/worthy of becoming an asset to the Association. A motion was made (Ashley-Hansen) that K. Smith should be re-admitted to the Association in good standing. This motion brought a great deal of discussion to the floor. Past history was reviewed and commented on. The secretary mentioned the $233.55 expense on special delivery costs, printing and mailing relative t.O past trouble with K. which amounts to over LIS per member, and that the Association would be relieved of that expense if K. was forgiven. Some members, who were directors when K. was ejected felt that he should now be given another chance. The President r.hen called for a vote by ballots. Ballots were collected and K. Smith was re-admitted by 111 for and 31 against, Jack Simpson recommended that all coaches at training camps and Jr. Nationals be certified. This was discussed on the floor and the President directed this to the new Board o Bob Zeigler, chairman of the Resolutions CO!I1JIlittee read their resolutions as follows; RESOLUTIONS FOR 1964 ANNUAL SPRING CLINIC Whereas the [SIA Annual Spring Clinic is presently being conducted at Alta, be it here resolved that a vote of thanks be given by the ISlA to Adrien Segil, Cli'1.ic Chairman, his committee,) the demonstrators" group leaders and all others helping with thE. Clinic 9 for a job well done; be it resolved that Mc Curt Chase be complimented for a fine presentation; be it resolved that this organization extend a vote of appreciation to the Peruvian Lodge, the Alta ski area. and their employees for cooperation in making their facilities available; and be it resolved that the ISlA commend Mr, John Herbert and ML Jerry Horton of the UoS, Forest Service for their attendance at the Clinic, and, be it resolved that the membership go on record as commending the officers and the Board of Directors of this Association for the time and effort they have devoted to the Association and its many diversified problems during the past year. Lou Lorenz, felt that we were placed in the middle, as a policing organization in the eyes of the Forest Service and as a militant meddler by some borderline -4- ski school directors who felt that they should be allowed to use lodge help, parking lot attendants or anyone, certified or not, if they became busy. Lou felt that the Association should represent qualified certified instructors and that competition would take care of flagrant violatorso Don Rhinehart felt that we would destroy all the progress made in upgrading. borderline ski schools if the "certified instructor" requirements were deleted from Forest Service Use Permits, and that the Forest Service should uphold this requirement. It was evident that the Wasatch Forest is the section where complaints arise. Jack Simpson announced the forming of a Coaches Association after the meeting. A motion was made (Sue Peterson-Toni Rhinehart) that the Certification Committee discussion be brought to the floor at once. Motion carried. Keith Lange asked Lou to discuss recommendations. Lou indicated that in the Wasatch area, the Forest Service has been very lax and recommended that the requirements for certified instructors be deleted from use permits. CERTIFIED SKI TEACHER i NTLRi\fOUNTAIN S]-::I ASSOClATJON INTERMO'UNTAIN SKI INSTRUCTORS ASSOCIATION MINUTES SPECIAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING - 4/18/64 Peruvian Lodge, Alta, Utah President Anderson called this special meeting for the purpose of taking up the appeal made by Reggy Vernet on November 30, 1963 for consideration of his dismissal from membership in the Association. His membership was cancelled by the Board of Directors under Section V (c) of the Articles of Incorporation. President Anderson called the meeting to order at 5:05 P.M. Roll was called and those present or absent duly recordedo The President asked for a reading of the minutes of the last General Meeting. Before this could start, a motion was made (Lash-Rhinehart) that these minutes be approved as mailed. Motion carried unanimously. President Anderson then read to the membership a letter dated October 18, 1963 from the ISlA to Reggy VerneL The President also read Section V of the Articles of Incorporation to familiarize the members with it and its purposes. The President then called for a discussion from the floor and an op~n~on from the membership. A motion was made (Lash-Thurgood) that the membership sustain the action of its directors. Members then took the floor and the opinions presented were somewhat unsure. Reggy has made an effort for retribution. The vote was called for and the Board overrulled 74 to 44. A motion was made (Staley-Burnham) that the Board have a meeting with Reggy present to review his case, Motion carried unanimously. A motion was made (ZeiglerPrice) that the special meeting be closed. Motion carried and meeting ended at 5:50 P.M, |
