Abstract A method for the removal of nitric oxide from gas streams is described. This patented Dow process consists of injection of gaseous chlorine into a NO-laden gas stream followed by rigorous scrubbing using an acidic aqueous solution. Comparable trials using water and different concentration brines are also reviewed. Removal efficiencies of +90% were observed in laboratory situations. Removal was found to be highly dependent upon gas stream Cl2:NO partial pressure ratio, scrubber temperature and pH. The process was determined to be highly mass transferred controlled and a reaction mechanism is proposed for the corresponding liquid phase chemistry.
