(a) Total Inputs of Energy for Heat, Power, and Electrical Generation Includes all energy sources used on-site (point of use). Electricity, if imported, is converted using 3,412 Btu/kWhr. If electricity is generated on-site, the energy use is measured directly. Total inputs excludes all energy sources used as raw materials or for other nonfuel purposes. (b) Boiler Fuel (Indirect Heating, Electrical Generation) Includes all fossil fuel sources used indirectly to produce steam, hot water, or generate electricity. Excludes electricity used for steam production, mechanical drives, and electrochemical processes. (c) Fuel Fired Directly for Process Heating Includes all fossil fuel sources used directly in the process. It excludes all non-process uses such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, on-site transportation, and facility support. (d) Boiler fuel use includes 1,343 trillion Btus fired by renewable fuels, a total of 1,300 is listed as by-product energy for heat, power, and electricity generation. All of the 1,300 is assumed to be used in boilers. (e) The Chemical industry figures included 526 trillion Btus of end uses not reported. The use of alternative fuels (not-natural gas, fuel oil, or coal) is assumed to be the majority of these uses. This "other" fuel source was assumed to be allocated 5 0 % in direct fired applications and 5 0 % in indirect (boiler) applications. (f) Petroleum refining includes 2,203 trillion Btus mainly fired by alternative fuels (nominally by -product fuel waste gas and petroleum coke). This "other" fuel source was assumed to be allocated 7 5 % in direct fired applications and 2 5 % in indirect (boiler) applications. (g) Based on four glass SIC codes (3211, 3221, 3229, 3296). (h) Metal casting cuts across SIC codes, an average has been assumed based on data supplied from EIA, American Foundrymen's Association, and the DOE-OIT Metal Casting Vision Study. (I) The steel industry figures include 1,118 trillion Btus fired by alternative fuels (nominally by product fuels of blast furnace and coke oven gas). This "other" fuel source was assumed to be allocated 7 5 % in direct fired applications and 2 5 % in indirect (boiler) applications. 3 |
