Henry David Thoreau once wrote, "A tree becomes a nest the moment a great dreamer hides in it." Nostalgic Nests is about creating spaces for peace, as these nests are a manifestation of the need to recover lost or elusive intimacy or peace. The rhythms of nature and the rhythms of craft created space for me to peacefully think and be in those moments. The repetitive motions of weaving together the branches was a meditative exercise to escape the stress of everyday life, reminding me of the structures I had built as a child. These structures became nests for my fond memories, as well as my current self to retreat to for practice and healing. As I was building up these nests around me, I tried to express the precariousness of nests and the holes that nostalgia has through the openness of the forms. This piece is part of the MFA exhibition "Woven Worlds". |
