Description Two buildings are seen next to a stacked pile of gilsonite bags in southern Uintah County. A small derrick is situated above a small gilsonite vein. Gilsonite is found in the Uintah Basin in the Bookcliffs area in verticle veins. Gilsonite is a black asphalt-like hydrocarbon that is used for many products. The Uintah Basin is the only place in the world that gilsonite is found in commercial quanities. It is still being mined at the American Gilsonite Company in Bonanza, Utah.
