Show 109 cattle, and during 1914 it was estimated that there were 200,OCO sheep in the Basin, including the Ashley Valley, and tha wool clip amounted to 1,500,000 pounds. Ths Winter feeding of both the cattle and sheep creates a market for both tho grain and forage crops of the Basin. In ihot, there has not "boon sufficient forage nor sufficient grain produced in tho Uintah Basin oountry of reoent years to supply the local dan and. During an open winter tha sheep do rot require feed? ing, but manage to subsist on the scant feed produced on the deserts to the south and east. Thi3 reduces the market for forage orops, and as in the winter of 1915-16, alfalfa hay sold for $5.00 per t on in the stack. On the other hand, during the winter of 1919-20, it sold far §50.00 per ton baled* Horses and mnlaa both do well in tha Basin, and it seems probable that the raising of both will become an industry, as a n amber of blooded stall ions and Jacks are owned loeally.
