I JoU 13 A.M..'9:, % | MAIL A D FILES DIVISION Sir:- | M ^ W «x ~" | L_J/_.. _ (In re "Sun Dance" to he held by the White- River Ute Indians at Vernal, Utah, during the first days of JHiLJ__ , Pursuant to your telegrams of July 1st and July 2nd, instructing me to have the United States Marshal and the necessary deputies, proceed to Vernal to prevent, if possible , the holding of the "Sun dance" of the White River Ute Indians, I instructed the Marshal to leave immediately and use all legal means to comply with the request of the Department of the Interior. It seems that the Department must have been misadvised as to the time and place of holding the sun dance. Upon his arrival at Vernal, the U.S. Marshal found that the sun dance had closed on July 2nd, and that it had been held some forty miles from Vernal at a rather inaccessible place in the mountains. The U.S. Marshal, vho is very familiar v/ith the Indians and their customs, remained and made such investigation as he thought consistent v/ith his duty,- and has submitted to me a letter containing a report of the conditions as he found them there, which I attach to this letter. You v;ill observe that the U.S. Msrshal, in his letter, requests -that I get the proper authorization for the expenses of this trip, and I have advised him that your telegram was |
