Show Boundaries, La Sal Indian Allotment July 2, 1923 The Forester, Washington, D. C. Dear Sir: Enclosed for your consideration are maps, report and all correspondence relating to a proposed elimination from the La Sal National Forest for the benefit of the Piute Indians. The Supervisor's report covers the situation quite fully and his recommendations have the approval of this office. This particular band of Indians have been the cause of considerable contention for several years and it may be that allotments on the land included in the elimination will have some beneficial effect upon the situation. The land has no high value for National Forest purposes. It will be noted that the Supervisor has recommended the reservation of rights of way along Cottonwood and Dry Wash Canyons. The closing of these rights of way will be somewhat embarrassing in the administration of the surrounding National Forest land especially from a grazing standpoint. Embarrasing situations might also result in the use of the rights of way if reserved and we desire to avoid any possible conflict with the Indians. If therefore, the Indian - bureau finds reservations objectionable an effort will be made to find some other means of passage for the permittees, and their stock. The country is unsurveyed , and it would be necessary to survey any reservations. Very truly yours, (signed) R.H. Rutledge District Forester |
