University of Utah Health Sciences Centers of Excellence Spring/ Summer 1987 Letter from the Vice President for Health Sciences We've highlighted eight Utah Centers of Excellence in this special issue of Health Sciences Report, hut research certainly isn't limited to these areas. In almost every department of the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, research-ers are pushing forward the boundaries of scientific and medical knowledge, which benefits Utah's economy, perpetuates research and medical advancements and, ultimately, improves the quality of health care for people everywhere. One measure of pro-ductivity is the economic impact of the bioscience revolution under way at the health sciences center, which was detailed in a study released last winter by the University of Utah's Bureau of Economic and Business Research. " Not only did the health sciences center bring in approximately $ 34 million in research grants to the state during 1985- 86, but over the years, no less than 15 new biomedical and medical supply firms have spun off from research undertaken by the center." Add to that the more than 2,100 jobs these companies provide for Utahns and you have a substantial contribution to the state's economy. It is especially significant when you note that the health sciences center receives around $ 25 million of its nearly $ 200 million budget from the state. Closely aligned to the health sciences center's research mission is its commitment to teaching the next generation of t S IH- II- I 111 health- care professionals. We need to train investi-gators for the future just as clearly as we need useful products for the present. And only research per-formed within academic settings, as opposed to the private sector, generates both researchers and new research projects. The greatest benefit of our research, however, is improved health care for all of us. " The quality of life in Utah is presumably better since the quality of health care in the state is augmented and enhanced by the unique medical technologies being devel-oped by the health sciences center," noted the bureau report. " Most certainly, the high calibre of medical research being done at the health sciences center has thrust the state into a prominent position worldwide as an area of medical expertise." I invite you to read through this issue to learn more about some of our premier research programs - from genetics to lasers, artificial organs to cardiovascular research. We feel, perhaps a bit immodestly, that these and the other areas we've showcased in this issue have rightly earned the appellation, Utah " Centers of Excellence." Don E. Detmer, M. D.
