At first, doctors suspected the flu when Tracy / i Lipman of Ogden couldn't hold up her head. But when the three- year- old lost all muscle control, they referred her to University of Utah Hospital, where pediatric neurologist Dr. Patrick Bray diagnosed Tracy's disease as dermatomyosites, a rare and usually fatal blood disorder. The youngster was treated with drugs and, for the past 14 years, has been in total remission. Tracy is now a sophomore majoring in commercial recreation at the University of Utah. " We feel indebted to University Hospital for saving our daughter's life, so we continue to make donations," say Kay and Allan Lipman, Jr. Last year, in addition to a monetary gift, Mrs. Lipman volunteered to chair the first annual Dickens Gala, where guests journeyed back to 19th century England for a buffet, craft sale and silent auction. " It was so much fun bringing together a group of people who had never met and helping them become a working, cohesive committee," notes Mrs. Lipman, who worked on the gala for six months. " It was a financial success the first year, and we're expecting an even better time next year." Some 350 people attended the Gala at $ 150 a couple. Artisans also donated 10 percent of their gross sales that evening, resulting in a $ 20,000 contribution to University Hospital's Endowment. See page 47 for more contributions made to the University of Utah Health Sciences Center by other generous individuals.
