Description Entamoeba histolytica is the third leading parasitic cause of death in developing nations, after malaria and schistosomiasis. The organism infects about 10% of the population of the world, resulting in 50 million cases of invasive disease each year and from 50,000 to 100,000 deaths. Disease caused by E. histolytica is most often expressed as ulcerative or inflammatory colitis; however, the organism occasionally travels to extraintestinal sites, including the central nervous system (CNS), producing neurologic disease.
