Description The association of acute or subacute loss of vision in one or both eyes causedby acute optic neuropathy precededor followed within days to weeks by a transverse or ascending myelitis was initially describedby Allbutt (320) andlater by Devic (321). Devic calledthe condition neuromyelitis optica, but it subsequently became known as "Devic's disease" through the efforts of his pupil, Gault (322), who devoted his thesis to the subject.
