Description |
Very many venomous and poisonous animals are medically important. Envenomation causes multiple disorders of which neurotoxicity is sometimes the major problem. The neurotoxins affect the presynaptic membrane or the postsynaptic membrane, or both. For some animals the precise part of neurotransmission which is blocked has been identified. Once envenomation has occurred the treatment comprises first aid, administration of antivenom if possible and supportive measures which may include ventilation and resuscitation. |
