Description Patients with calcific retinal emboli (CRE) usually present with partial or complete monocular visual field loss. These emboli may arise from calcific (Ca+) deposits or plaques on cardiac valves or other intracardiac structures, the aortic arch, and/or the carotid arteries. The purpose of this case series is to determine the association between CRE and valvular heart disease. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 344 patient records with final diagnosis of retinal embolism from 1976 to 1998.
