Oral history interview by Mary Heers with Delyle Carling. Topics include: Being a semi-retired farmer; Being born in Fillmore, but growing up in Spanish Fork and Meadow, Utah; Growing alfalfa for dairy cows and corn silage on his 2700 acre farm; Selling most of his hay in California and most of his corn locally and in Delta; Cutting alfalfa four times a year to maximize the new growth; Dairy farmers chopping up the entire corn plant for silage (fermented feed); The use of separate machines for chopping and bagging the chopped corn plants; Rotating alfalfa and corn with wheat plantings; Running farm operations and a small construction business out of the same office; Getting hay loads right for transportation to California; Changes is farming during his lifetime; Driverless farm equipment and trucks guided by GPS; The rising cost of farm equipment, but not missing the days of using horses; The importance of having a good business accountant; Overseas market for hay; Supplying concrete for construction projects; Water supply delivery methods; The technology of modern farm machinery, and the use of solar power. |
