Title: Utah Water Records Project Inventory,

Summary: From 1979 through 1981 the Utah State Historical Society conducted a survey of water records pertaining to Utah, in the custody of Utah State Archives and of private water companies. The project was funded by a grant from the National Historic Publications and Records Commission and was later broadened to include the holdings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Historical Dept. records. The result was the creation of two inventories, one for each branch of the project. These have been kept as separate collections. Each entry contains a short synopsis of the record surveyed. Oral interviews with 40 company water masters are also included.

During 1979 and 1981 the Utah State Historical Society undertook a water records project funded by a grant from the National Historical Records and Publications Commission. The objectives of the project were twofold:

A. To prepare an inventory to the folder level of all water records in the Utah State Archives

B. To conduct a survey of all water records in private hands in Utah and arrange for their accessioning into repositories.

During 1980 and 1981 the project was extended to include an index to all records in the Archives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints relating to water. In addition, a comprehensive oral history project was undertaken, with the goal of supplementing the information contained in the written records.

Content Description +/-

The material in the collection was gathered as part of the two water records projects. It includes correspondence, reports, publications, indexes, worksheets, and other material used in conducting the survey and inventory. It also includes transcripts of oral history interviews.

Part I of the collection documents the survey of almost one thousand private water companies. The collection includes, county by county, the correspondence, questionnaires, and data sheets for each company. In addition, it includes an accession schedule for records of various companies who agreed to donate their records to the Society.

Part II of the collection includes inventories for various agencies connected with water whose records are in the Utah State Archives. In addition to the inventories, there is also a master subject index to those records.

Part III of the collection consists of the oral history transcripts and tapes. These are arranged alphabetically by interviewee, with a brief note indicating the subject of the interview.
