The mile event had a very close finish with Utah's Amanda Mergaert finishing second with a time of 4:52.00. BYU's Katie Palmer edged Mergaert over the finish line with a time of 4:51.73 to win the event. In the 800m finals, junior Lucy Yates clocked a time of 2:09.40 giving her second place over BYU's Nicole Clark (2:09.87). Sophomore Angela Kaplar qualified for the 60m hurdle finals where she finished sixth place with a time of 8.64. The high jump event had an incredible finish with Utah's Langley Iverson and BYU's Ada Robinson competing in a jump-off to determine the champion. Both athletes cleared the mark of 6-0.75 and had the same amount of misses at the end of the event. Robinson beat Iverson in the jump-off to win the event championship. Candus Aiello had a big day in the shot put for the Utes. She finished with mark of 47-1.75 earning her fourth place in the event. Aiello's throw beat her previous personal-best by more than three feet. Finishing second for the Utes and seventh overall was sophomore Alanna Nulph with a throw of 46-10.00. Nikkie Rudder finished eighth in the event with a distance of 46-0.50. The 2011 MWC Championships shot put event marks the first time under Utah throws coach Tapio Kuusela that three Utah throwers have qualified for the final round in the same event. Utah's Brianna LeRoy (pentathlon), Nikki Dotter (DMR), Rosalie Griffin (DMR), Kendahl Melvin (DMR), Iverson (high jump), Yates (800m), and Mergaert (DMR, mile) earned All-MWC honors for their performances. The distance medley relay team finished third overall with a time of 12:07.51. Brianna LeRoy continued to have a great performance at the conference meet by posting a new lifetime-best mark of 18-10.75 (fifth place) in the long jump. In the pole vault, sophomore Klaudia Rokossa cleared the mark of 12-10.25. She is currently listed as seventh place, however it is under officials review and Utah coaches believe that Rokossa will move into the sixth-place spot.
