Title |
Cultural districts guidance from districts in the western us & applications for Salt Lake City, Utah |
Date |
2022 |
Description |
In 2020 the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency (SLCRDA) assisted with a development project, the West Quarter Development, near the City's historic Japan town. The outcry from the community and the interests of the City and the developer to honor the community, led to a collaborative engagement process that resulted in the Japan town Design Strategy and Guidelines. Although the process took considerable time and consideration, the SLCRDA facilitated communication between community members and the developer which resulted in changes to the proposed development. And with a consulting architecture firm, the process also established the design guidelines that include phases for the future alteration of the street and place-making elements that mark the historic community. The success of the project prompted the SLCRDA to request assistance from the Masters of City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah. |
