Title Supporting the development of Utah catastrophic housing plan
Date 2025
Description Wasatch fault poses a high risk for a major earthquake in Utah. Unreinforced masonry structures built before the 1970s are more vulnerable to this hazard region (Utah Division of Emergency Management, 2024). On average, every 300 years, an earthquake occurs along one of the five central segments of the Wasatch fault between Brigham City and Nephi. Utah Hazard Mitigation Plan identifies the potential catastrophic hazards relative to Risk Ratings: Earthquake, Flood & Wildfire region (Utah Division of Emergency Management, 2024). Utah does not have an inventory of numbers, types, & locations of housing units, and there is a need for pre-disaster risk mapping, housing inventories, and shelter networks.
