Description |
Stain: Azan. Specialized venules (1) or so-called high endothelial venules (HEV) are here located in the paracortical area (4) close to the lymphatic follicle (2+3). The HEVs are lined by cuboidal or columnar endothelial cells that possess specific homing receptors for antigen-primed B- and T lymphocytes. The HEV's are the sites of entry of the lymphocytes into the paracortex of the lymph node (lymphocyte homing mechanism), where they leave the blood stream through these HEV and subsequently by diapedesis (--> arrows) between the endothelial cells. B lymphocytes migrate to the lymphatic follicles in the cortex. T lymphocytes remain in the thymus-dependent area of the paracortex. (2) germinal centre in a cortical lymphatic follicle; (3) part of the mantle zone. |
