Show A group photograph of the "Girls Glee Club" at Wasatch Academy. The group of young women poses in front of a large blackboard. They stand in a uniform three row formation with the back row standing, and the second and front rows sitting on chairs of various heights. The young women are wearing a variety of dark and light (mostly dark) colored clothing which consists of dresses, skirts, blouses, shoes and hosiery. A few of the young women wear necklaces. There is little detail in the room where the young women pose for the photograph. The blackboard dominates the background and beneath the blackboard the light colored wall is visible. The floor they stand or sit upon appears to be hard (probably wooden) and is semi-dark colored. |
Further Information |
The condition of the photograph is good. The corners have slight creases in them and there is a slight tare along the bottom edge right hand side. A pinhole is visible in the top border at the very center. Written on the back, in blue ink, is the following: "Girls Glee Club [;] Cut no. 31." Written in pencil is: "Girls Glee Club [,] 4 ½ X 6 ½ Wasatch [circled]." The back also shows slight signs of yellow discoloration due to ageing. Wasatch Academy was founded on April 19, 1875 by the Reverend Duncan James McMillan whom also had a major influence in founding Westminster College. A protégé of Sheldon Jackson, he came to the Salt Lake Valley in March of 1875 to find refuge from his bronchial condition and to establish a proselytizing mission to convert Mormons. However, McMillan soon turned his efforts to education when his proselytizing efforts towards the Mormons proved futile. He then founded Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah and opened a number of subsequent schools of the same nature in northern and southern Utah. |
