Description |
The above snapshot was taken at the famed Saltair Resort near Salt Lake City about August 1918. My father enjoyed swimming and he and some of his friends occasionally were able to enjoy the sport. Dad is in the upper right hand corner and one of his friends is in the very last row peeking over the shoulder of an unidentified swimmer. I recall my father taking us, as small children, to the resort and to other resorts in the area. These were very special, all-day occasions. I do not know why my father went to this trouble and expense (we didn't have too much money) and I remember we are always the only Japanese family at these outings. I think now it was because Dad was exposed to the American way of family "togetherness" when he was a "school boy" in the household of a well-to-do Mormon family in Ogden where he went to business. I recall he spoke English to us in public but in our home which was a curious blend of American and strictly Japanese customs, he insisted that all of us children speak Japanese so my mother would never feel left out. Along with our usual tsukemono, sashimi and okazu, we always had a roast on Sunday; fried chicken on the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving and Christmas were always observed in the typical American way. New Year's Day was strictly Japanese-style except we always had coffee in the morning along with the tea. |
