Description The slopes of Fremont Island are dotted with peculiar wind-eroded rock formations. In 1843, Kit Carson carved a cross, now known as the Carson Cross, in one of the formations when he visited the island with Captain John C. Fremont. The cross inscription was a mystery to Stansbury who first observed it in 1850 until the publication if Kit Carson's own story in 1926. Mr. Earl Stoddard, cousin of Charles Stoddard, points to the inscription. Gift of M.J. Burson.
