Content Description +/-

This collection consists of issues of the newspaper entitled The Campus crier, dating between February 1946 and September 21, 1955. It was published by students of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The content of the newspapers in the collection cover 11 years of life on the Westminster College campus. The issues are typewritten on letter-size paper. The first issue is recorded as Vol. II, No. 2, was published on Feb. 22, 1946, and is 7 pages in length. The papers include articles on a variety of school subjects, calendars of events, reviews of school plays, letters from the Dean's Office, club news, student editorials, and a section on the gossip around the school.

Issues beginning in October of 1947 have a new format and a new numbering system (Vol. 1, No. 1). The newspaper is printed on larger newsprint and with a more professional appearance. While articles resemble those appearing in the earlier issues of the Crier, a wider and more sophisticated range of material is also included, for example articles about the threat of Communism, a new section called "Poet's Corner", football in the Midwest, and information about Governor Maw's visit to the campus, as well as advertisements for local businesses. This format remains consistent until October 1951 when the newspaper returns to its original presentation and loses some sophistication in subject matter. Styles shift constantly, possibly due to changes in editors or members of the staff; however, the information presented to the campus remains fairly consistent.

The final copy of the newspaper suggests that the Campus YWCA, a very influential club focusing on activities for the entire campus, would only be publishing the paper on a sporadic basis, "news, announcements, and comments on Campus 'Y' ideas, activities and personalities." It also states it is not in direct competition with Confidential or Mad Comic, two national publications popular at the time. These explanations help to determine the end of the publication's run, especially with the ending statement, "requiescat in pace, s'il vous plait" or "rest in peace, if you please" in a combination of Latin and French.

In addition to the published issues of The Campus crier, the collection includes a microfilm copy of the issues on a single reel.

This collection as well as the other newspaper publications on campus were microfilmed in the spring of 2002 in conjunction with the Forum newspaper office. However, large gaps remain a problem in achieving a truly complete collection. Newspapers were microfilmed according to the calendar year they were published, not according to volume or issue number.

The other campus newspapers contain similar information about occurrences on campus and continue fairly regularly to the present. They include: The Blurb, The Parson, and The Forum. Copies of all known newspaper publications can also be found on microfilm in the Giovale Library Archives.

Gaps in the collection: Only one issue from 1946 is present in the collection. Other issues wanting include 1947 – No. 3 and 4; 1951 – January (Vol. 5, no.4), and 1952 – October. Information shows that The Campus crier continued until the fall of 1953; however, no records with any specific dates appear after 1952. Possible explanations for the missing issues could either be that none have survived or that they were never actually published.
