Description Acute chiasmal syndromes usually result from compression by tumor. Four lesions are responsible for the characteristic pattern of visual impairment in 95% of adult patients: 1) pituitary adenoma 2) suprasellar meningioma 3) craniopharyngioma 4) giant carotid aneurysm On rare occasions, non-neoplastic processes involve the chiasm. Because they are uncommon, they are frequently misidentified and create diagnostic confusion.
