Description Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Paracoccidioidomycosis, South American blastomycosis) is a dimorphic fungus that exists in nature as a mycelium and in mammalian tissue as a yeast form. It thus appears as an oval-to-round cell that varies in size from 440 micrometers in diameter in tissues and exudates as well as in cultures. P. brasiliensis reproduces by multiple budding, with numerous small (24 micrometers) buds surrounding the mother cell and connected to it by small bridges of cytoplasm. This pattern of reproduction results in a characteristic ""pilot-wheel"" appearance.
