Title Genetics of Mitochondria
Creator St George-Hyslop, Peter H
Subject Mitochondria; Genetics; Chloroplasts; Mitochondrial Genome; Gene Expression
Description There is considerable evidence that mitochondria and chloroplasts arose as part of animal and plant cells as the result of an early evolutionary endosymbiotic relationship between two primitive cells. Several features of these intracellular organelles continues to reflect this evolution (eg persistence of a circular genome carrying several genes under a single promoter element). This review will examine some of the peculiarities of the mitochondrial genetics as a basis for subsequent discussions on the role of mitochondria in some neurologic diseases.
