Show My dear Mr. Colton: In the absence of Commissioner Burke in the field, receipt is acknowledged of your letter of April 13 regarding Indians residing on the public domain in San Juan County, Utah. Replying to your suggestion that something should be done for the relief of these Indians, I may say that steps have been taken by this Department to provide allotments of land for these Indians and our plans also contemplate the establishment of one or more schools for the education of the children provided suitable sites can be obtained. The Secretary on April 17th approved the necessary instructions to two of our field men to make a thorough investigation of the conditions surrounding these Indians, to assist them in filing applications for land, and to report on the advisability of establishing schools for the benefit of the Indian children. It is hoped that we will be able to accomplish something that will relieve the situation and place these Indians in a position to become self-supporting respecting citizens. Your interest in this matter, is appreciated and a copy of this letter is inclosed for your convenience. Sincerely yours, (signed) E.B. Meritt Acting Commissioner. Honorable Don B. Colton, Member of Congress, Salt Lake City, Utah |
