Show Mr. Edward E. McKean, Supt., Consolidated Ute Agency. My dear Mr. McKean: This will acknowledge receipt of your letter of April 9th, regarding your recent visit to Blanding, Utah, and vicinity. There is inclosed a copy of our letter of instructions to Mr. A. W. Simington, Special Allotting Agent at Gallup, New Mexico, and he has no doubt already arranged a meeting with you as instructed. It is desired that you accompany Mr. Simington and give him the benefit of all information in your possession concerning these Indians, and assist him in his dealings with the Indians. You will also look carefully into the educational needs of the children and report whether a day school or two day schools should be established for their benefit. If you conclude that a school should be established (or two), you will select a suitable site or sites and report whether there is water available and what will be the total cost involved. In other words, we desire full information on which to base an intelligent consideration of the advisability or practicability of providing a school or schools for these Indians. Sincerely yours, E.B. Meritt Acting Commissioner. Approved: (Sgd.) HUBERT- WORK. Secretary |
