Title Walsh & Hoyt: Laboratory and Neuroimaging Findings
Creator Laura J. Balcer, MD
Affiliation Professor, Department of Neurology, NYU Langone
Subject Demyelinating Diseases; Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis; Adem; Postinfections Encephalomyelitis; Laboratory Findings; Neuroimaging Findings
Description The laboratory and neuroimaging findings in ADEM are similar to those of MS. Analysis of the CSF in patients with ADEM typically reveals a lymphocytic pleocytosis associated with increased protein, elevated IgG index, and oligoclonal bands; however, the oligoclonal bands eventually disappear as the disease runs its course, and this may serve to distinguish the disease from MS, in which the bands, once present, tend to persist even when the patient is in clinical remission.
