Title Medicolegal Issues in TBI
Creator Craig Smith, MD
Subject mTBI; Tort Law; IME; QEEG Brain Mapping; DTI
Description This brief review of the medical legal aspects of TBI will focus on the importance of neuro-ophthalmologist engagement in elucidating the appropriate diagnosis of mTBI and defining the presence of injury; then helping direct appropriate evidence-based standards of treatment and disability ratings. This engagement may come through either tertiary referral or via an Independent Medical Evaluation (IME). The recent NANOS Consensus Statement on Visual Rehabilitation in mTBI brings into focus our society's engagement across multiple disciplines engaged in the care of these patients. Mention of more recent technologic advances in the "Brain Injury Law" evaluation of those with mTBI will be carried out.
