Description This study examined and described the relationship between job stress and job performance as perceived by hospital-based nursing administrators in Utah. The research question was: Is there a correlation between perceived job stress and perceived performance track record, and is this correlation significant? Pearson's Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient ® identified the covariant relationships. Instruments included two self-reports (Perceived Job Stress Indices; Perceived Performance Tack Record) and a personal information sheet. Descriptive statistics summarized a grouped, and ranked the self-report items and personal information. Analysis of the result revealed significant inverse relationships between stress and job performance. However, years of experience in a top level nursing administration position demonstrated less stress and better perceived performance. Age, educational level, number of years in the current position and hospital bed size demonstrated no significant relationship to stress or perceived performance. Workload was ranked high, but did not demonstrate a significant correlation to total stress or perceived performance among nurse administrators participating in this study.
