Description |
Three Pieces for Orchestra is a musical composition scored for a symphony orchestra of traditional size and written in a recent twentieth century style. The duration of each of the three related pieces is approximately five minutes. The first piece, in alternating slow and fast tempos, introduces a germinating motive upon which the entire composition is based. This piece presents a simple arch form with the tempo changes clearly marking the various sections. The second piece, in a slow tempo, is based on a twelve-tone row which itself is an expansion of the germinating motive of the first piece. Identical opening and closing material encloses a binary middle section forming a ternary structure overall. The third piece, in a fast tempo, is a simple five-part rondo. The germinating motive is again expanded to form the subject matter for the ritornello section. A coda provides a summary for the entire composition with thematic material form the first piece in combination with material from the third piece. |
