Description |
Within the short stories and novels of F. Scot; Fitzgerald looms the recurrent anecdote of a young man who aspires to win the "golden girl," the girl usually belonging to a family with an established fortune and socially above him. In an effort to win the girl, the young man endeavors to amass a personal fortune so that he may provide the girl with the leisurely life which she demands. The girl uses her beauty and charm to realize a life better than that which her father provided. Ultimately, the single-mindedness and self centeredness of the girl's desires cause the young man to mortgage himself to the brink, both spiritually and financially. The great demand to meet the girl's desires induces anxiety to the point that the young man experiences a devastating blow, either psychologically or physically. |
