Urbanizing the Suburban City |
CA+P Course |
Sarah Sabiston; ARCH 6005 - Graduate Studio "Urbanizing the Suburban City"; Spring Semester 2010, Session 2 |
Description |
Berkeley architect Renee Chow maintains that "We experience and use our built environment as a continuous structure of spaces and elements that we dwell in, move through, and look upon. This view of the environment, commonly referred to as fabric, examines settings in which buildings are attached." The goal of the studio is to follow Chow's "fabric" based model to address the need for increased density in the "West Temple Gateway" community of Salt Lake City. The studio will explore architectural interventions and transformations within various scales that contribute to the making of, shared, public and private spaces in the residential setting. Using design as a mode of research, the studio will begin by examining case studies of dwelling fabrics and then perform a detailed setting study (not a site analysis of the traditional sort) before moving on to the transformation of a selected site. Design Team (in alphabetical order): Joshua Dean Arrington, Krysta Mae Dimick, Jennifer Elise Gill, Brian Paul Glad, Allison Marie Harper, Bryce Jon Johnson, Jessica Ann Seppi, Michael Ryan Wilcox, Adriane Wilson, and Edward Thomas Wright. |
