Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-A convocation marks the beginning of the academic year and usually includes an invocation and a welcome by the Student Body President. The Westminster College President then gives his convocation address. This speech often outlines the objectives and goals of the school over the next year, while also charging faculty, staff, and students with the mission to reach their full potential. Aside from the direct address to the students, faculty members are asked to inspire their students, while maintaining their fervor for their own intellectual pursuits. The address is followed by the introduction of new faculty and staff members. Often a guest speaker is asked to address the assembly. The history and legacy of Westminster College is frequently spotlighted and often referred to as a symbol of perseverance. Convocation ceremonies held for Founders' Day exemplify this approach. The convocations begin and end with formal processional and recessional ceremonies in full academic regalia. Content Description +/-This collection consists of the convocation records of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. The materials date from 1950-2012 and include invitations, programs, and speeches. The Fall 1957 convocation was held in Dane Hansen Stadium, with Governor George D. Clyde speaking. Convocations in the 1977-1980 school years were held in Malmsten Amphitheatre. At the February 25, 1981 convocation, the Conclave Address was given by philanthropist and Westminster College trustee Obert C. Tanner who advised students that, "life in college is a place and time when young people try to find their main purpose in life, a time and place when some of life's final decisions are made." An honorary degree was conferred "in honor of Nathan Eldon Tanner, First Counselor, First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints ... conferred this day the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters". The 1998 Opening Convocation took place on the east side of the Giovale Library and the speaker was Pat Shea, Director of the Federal Bureau of Land Management. In 1999, the convocation celebrated "125 years of academic excellence" and the speaker was Presbyterian Church and Westminster College historian Douglas Brackenridge, who also spoke at the convocation the follow year, 2000. From 2002-2010, Westminster's 16th president, Michael Bassis, gave the convocation addresses. The August 23, 2008 convocation for the "134th Academic Year" was held in the Behnken Field House of the Dolores Doré Eccles Health, Wellness and Athletic Center. The convocation was also held in Behnken in 2010, with President Bassis speaking, and again in 2012 with Westminster's 17th president, Brian Levin-Stankevich giving the address. Other speakers have included the former Utah Governor Scott M. Matheson. Examples of the impact of former leaders at the College can be found in Dr. Manford A. Shaw's Founders' Day speech extolling former presidents, especially, Dr. Herbert W. Reherd and Dr. Robert D. Steele.
