Image was scanned from color slide. Caption is from photographer's notes on slide. Showing the protective ornament called gibohshu (onionhead) on the rooftop of the building in which the celebrated Monju Bosatsu (goddess of wisdom, education and intelligence) is ensconced, one of three selected locations in Japan. The statue is usually not available for public viewing. Amanohashidate is a pine-covered sand spit whose name means: bridge to heaven. |
