Description Capitol Reef National Monument is a part of the long line of Waterpocket Fold that runs some 150 miles from Thousand Lake Mountain to the Colorado River on the south. Named by A. H. Thompson of the Powell Survey from the narrow deep pits at the base of the Navajo sandstone that hold water most of the year, the cliffs present a brilliant display of sedimentary layers. These range from dark red Moenkopi, glinting with bright threads of gypsum and capped with Shinarump, up through blue-gray and violet Chinle shales to orange Wingate cliffs topped with a thin band of red Kayenta, which is in turn surmounted by the white cones and turrets of Navajo sandstone. The low terrace in the center of the photograph, where the road curves out of sight, is what remains of an earlier bed of the Fremont River which now flows 300 feet below. The Terrace is dark with gravels brought down by the river from the high land to the west.
