Norman D. Nevills and Don Harris, a USGS engineer based at Mexican Hat, built three strong boats using marine plywood. Norm called their wide, flat-bottomed craft with upturned bows and square sterns, "cataract" boats. The Boats were named "WEN" (William E. Nevills initials), "Botany" (the theme of the expedition), and "Mexican Hat" (Nevills and Harris home town). |
