Content Description +/-This collection consists of 37 volumes of annual publications of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. The materials in the collection, dating from 1914-1970, are bound together by school year. It is not known when or by whom the practice of binding these volumes together began. One volume of publications (1966-1967) has been bound as a hardback book. All others were glued (or nailed) together with a paper cover (listing academic year) attached. It is presumed that each volume includes most (if not all) of the printed material produced by the college for a particular academic year. Typically, the following six types of publications are found within each volume: flyers and leaflets, newsletters, pamphlets, form letters, programs, and postcards/note cards. The most common and significant inclusion in each volume is the Utah Westminster, the college's official newsletter (published monthly or quarterly depending on the year from 1907-1971). Since Westminster College's academic catalog was a numbered issue of the Utah Westminster, several catalog editions (the "Catalog Edition of the Utah Westminster") are included. Programs are the second most common publication in this series. These programs document concerts, lectures, plays, recitals, and other events held on the Westminster campus. They provide all of the necessary details—where and when an event was held, participants (cast members, players, etc.), a schedule of activities (e.g., musical selections, scenes, etc.), and itineraries for larger engagements such as commencement or graduation. Some programs offer additional information regarding the function, such as scene descriptions for a play and upcoming events. Flyers and leaflets are usually one-page advertisements that announce upcoming events (i.e., concerts, lectures, and plays) to be held on the Westminster campus. They include the date, time, and location of a specific event. Pamphlets in the collection are small publications distributed by the college. Most are promotional publications created to describe the college and its campus. They were distributed to prospective students to promote attendance at Westminster College or the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute. A few form letters were also included in this collection. Typically the letters were either from the College President or the College Dean acknowledging (and thanking) successful fundraising efforts or to invite the community to a college function. Postcards and notecards in the collection are invitations directed to specific individuals. They contain concise information regarding the specifics of a certain event or an individual financial appeal. For example, the first volume has an example of both: a postcard (a financial appeal) sent out on behalf of Westminster College, asking for monetary donations for the Presbyterian College Board and an invitation that invites the recipient to attend a "toast" in behalf of longtime College staff member and presidential secretary, Almira Dodge. Some records included in this collection are very common while others are quite rare. For example, a single issue of Purple and Gold, a student newsletter published during the 1934–1935 school year is included. While it is listed as the third issue of the second volume, it is the only surviving issue found at Westminster College. Gaps in the collection: There are no volumes for the annual publications from the school years 1915-1916, 1916-1917, 1919-1920 through 1930-1931, 1946-1947, 1948-1949, and 1949-1950. Collection Use +/-Restrictions on Access: Open to public research. Access to parts of this collection may be restricted under provisions of state or federal law. Twenty-four hours advance notice is encouraged. Restrictions on Use: It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain any necessary copyright clearances. Permission to publish material must be obtained from the director of the Giovale Library. Preferred Citation: Westminster College annual publications, 1914-1970, ACC-104, Giovale Library Archives, Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. Administrative Information +/-Arrangement: Arranged chronologically by school year. Processing Note: Processed by Joshua Ivie in January 2007. The majority of the publications in this series have been bound together unprofessionally. An attempt was made to separate the publications in order to complete other series as well as increase the longevity of this collection, but in most cases, it became apparent that the process of separation would cause unnecessary damage on the bound publication(s) and this practice was abandoned.
