Description Color photograph. Sq-w (Women's) Dance -On the first day of the ceremony two singers (medicine men) prepare an emblem or scepter called the 'Stick'. Toward evening, this is carried to the camp of the Receiver's party by the man designated as Carrier. A party of horsemen from the Maker's camp ride along as escort. Acceptance of the 'Stick' by the head of the Receiver's camp constitutes a vow of unfailing friendship with the people of the Maker's camp. The 'Stick' is then passed to an outstanding young woman, unmarried and recognized as a person of superior qualities. The safety of the 'Stick' is her responsibility, and she carries it with her during all public appearances, including the dancing. The Carrier and his escort are provided with food and, after sundown, the first night's dancing begins. No attribution for the quote
