Description |
covered in snow. A telephone pole stands in the distance near a railroad track. Horses or cattle stand near the pole. A group of poles, possibly forming a teepee, also stand in the distance. A sign stands in the left background., The sarcophagus of Chipeta, wife of Ouray, chief of the Utes from 1820 until 1880, south of Montrose at the site where Ouray and Chipeta lived after the Brunot Treaty of 1873. Chipeta died Aug. 16, 1924 at the age of 81. She was originally buried on the Uintah Indian Reservation in Utah, but her body was moved to the concrete mausoleum in March of 1925. The front end of the sarcophagus has "" Chipeta "" chiseled into it. The mausoleum and surrounding area are lightly. |
