Additional Information |
"Scotty's Castle," the main building of the Death Valley Ranch, was built in the 1920s and 1930s by financier Albert M. Johnson. He was the backer of prospector Walter Scott, "Death Valley Scotty," who claimed to have discovered a gold mine. Scotty was a great storyteller, who convinced travelers that he had built the castle with proceeds from his gold mine (which was nonexistent). After the Johnsons died, the National Park Service purchased and preserved the castle |
