Guide to the Mary D. Brown papers

Mary Donaldson Brown was born in Salt Lake County on July 10, 1910 to Alexander and Agnes Brown (Agnes D. Barclay). Alexander was a carpenter; both he and Agnes were born in Scotland and immigrated to the United States. Mary had 3 younger siblings. She was a Class of 1928 alumna of the Preparatory Department (High School) of Westminster College. She received both her B.S. and M.S. from the University of Utah. Her M.S. thesis (Dept. of Zoology, 1937) was entitled Factors involved in bird migration. She went on to graduated with honors from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1944. Mary moved to Oakland, California in 1961 to care for her aging parents. Before Ms. Brown retired in 1975 she had various occupations including working with the migrant ministry, serving as Director of Christian Education in several churches in the San Francisco Bay Area, and teaching in public schools. Ms. Brown held offices in the Presbyterian Church and the White Shrine of Jerusalem Masonic Order. She died December 20, 1999 at the age of 89 in Los Gatos, California, survived by three nieces and a nephew.

This collection consists primarily of materials collected by Mary D. Brown while she attended the Preparatory Department (High School) at Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah, graduating in 1928, and programs/menus from alumni dinners she attended until 1938.

Included in the collection are a letter to Westminster College President Peggy Stock from Ada (Mrs. H. Howard) Black of Los Gatos, California, a friend of Mary Brown's who donated the materials, an invitation to a home party from President and Mrs. Reherd (1733 S. 13th Street, across the street, currently 1300 East, from campus), a Junior Class Prophecy, and a photocopy of Mary D. Brown's obituary published in the San Jose Mercury News.

The programs in the collection (Box 1, Folder 5) include those from several theater productions (Mary sang alto in the chorus), the Latin Club, the Westminster Girls' Glee Club concert, the cornerstone laying and dedication programs for the new Westminster College Gymnasium. In addition, there are programs and menus from various alumni functions Mary Brown attended in the 1930's (alumni banquets held in 1930, 1934, and 1938, and a menu from the Washington's Birthday Banquet held 1930 in Ferry Hall). There is also a photograph of President Reherd in the Programs folder.

Box 1, Folder 6 contains Senior Class '28, The Pen, a publication which served to review the Class of 1928's high school years at Westminster College, somewhat equivalent to a brief year book in mimeographed form. Mary is listed as a staff writer for "Athletics". Box 1, Folder 7 contains a 1930 announcement written in the form of a song for the Y.M.[C.A.] and Y.W.[C.A.].
