Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-Dorothy J. Stacey was born circa 1913 in Idaho to Eugene and Frances G. Stacey. Her father Eugene was born circa 1878 in Kansas to parents born in England. Her mother Frances was born circa 1877 in Ohio. The couple had four children, Dorothy was born about a year after her older sister Frances M Stacey. A younger sister (Lillian L. Stacey) followed a year after Dorothy, and Dorothy's brother (Eugene G. Stacey) five years after that. Dorothy graduated in June 1931 from Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah with 19 other classmates. She then went to the University of Utah where she received a B.A. in romance languages. She graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Kappa Phi. Since it is was difficult to find a job at that time, she continued her education at the university and received a Master's degree in French and Spanish. In 1936 Stacey was hired to teach French and Spanish at Westminster College where she remained for 5 years. However, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, she left the college to become a translator in the Bureau of Censorship in Nogales, Arizona. Later, she went to Washington D.C. to work in the Office of Inter-American Affairs. This led to a position in the International Fellowship Program within the U.S. Public Health Services Department where she worked for 30 years, moving from Administrative Assistant to Program Director. Her career provided her with the opportunity to travel all over the world and to meet many important and interesting people. However, she never forgot her friends and teaching experiences at Westminster College. Over the years, she has continued to make financial contributions to Westminster and attend events and reunions when possible, including funding for the Dorothy J. Stacey International Stipend, available to Westminster College students who wish to pursue educational opportunities abroad. Sources of biographical note, viewed online October 21, 2014:
Content Description +/-This collection consists primarily of materials collected by Dorothy J. Stacey while she attended Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah, graduating in 1931, and as a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. In addition there are alumni and donor memorablia she collected or wrote in later years. The materials date from 1925-1996. Box 1, Folder 1 contains a Delta Delta Delta songbook dated 1925; 10 pages from the 1932 Tri-Delta songbook have been tipped in. Box 1, Folder 2 contains an officer and member directory for the Salt Lake City Alliance, Delta Delta, Delta, 1934-1935. The cover of this small booklet is autographed "Dorothy J. Stacey" on the cover. Box 1, Folder 3 contains miscellaneous letters, notecards, and newspaper clippings. There is a letter dated March 17, 1985 from her longtime Westminster friend Hettie Kelm and a letter from President Peggy Stock dated October 8, 1996. There is Westminster College campaign notecard, undated, sent from Janet A. Glaeser, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement, Westminster College of Salt Lake City thanking Stacey for her contribution, and two notecards (undated) from "Peggy" and "Janet". The clippings were probably sent from Hettie Kelm as the are in regards to her daughter Linda Kelm's vocal career. One is from a Salt Lake City paper, perhaps a Westminster College publication, mentioning that Linda Kelm is a Westminster College alum and studied voice at the college. The second is an article dated June 5, 1982 from the San Francisco Chronicle praising soprano Linda Kelm's debut with the San Francisco Opera in "Turnadot". Box 1, Folder 4 contains a Westminster College "Vintage Reunion" souvenir book dated July 20-21, 1984 for the Classes of 1936-1943. The 66 p. booklet includes the program of the event, biographical information about members of the classes, and photographs and addresses of class members who attended the reunion. Box 1, Folder 5 contains "Career reminiscences" written by Dorothy Stacey, dated October 17, 1996, presumably prepared for the October 1996 Westminster College reunion weekend. Box 1, Folder 6 contains "A time for Westminster : reunion weekend, October 17-19, 1996", a small brochure mailed by Alumni Relations to alumni to announce the event. Box 1, Folder 7 contains an undated handwritten book of Bible stories that includes illustrations from other publications (pasted in). The inscription reads "To Mother from Dorothy and Grandmother".
