It is a Presbyterian magazine that contained information on church news, meeting schedules, individuals (educators, missionaries, ministers), and community development. It is extensively illustrated with various photographs and drawings. The publication statement in the Nov. 18, 1894 issue states it is "published weekly in the interest of Christian work in Salt Lake City...and with the co-operation of the Methodist Episcopal, Congregational Presbyterian, Baptist and Christian denominations, and the Y.M.C.A., W.C.T.U and Rescue Mission Scoeities". Issues included local advertisements (for such things as watches, furs, railroad tickets, tailors, photographers, bicycles and typewriters, druggists, and electric supplies). The Kinsman was an independent Christian temperance periodical published in Salt Lake City by the Kinsman Publishing Company. It has a family/religious base and some photographs. Vol. 1 issues states it is "a family paper published monthly, 314 State Street, Salt Lake City ... Wm. R. Campbell, editor and manager. The Pacific Christian Advocate is an early 20th Century Methodist publication that was generally published on the West Coast (primarily in Portland, Oregon but for a short period in San Francisco). It contains articles relating to religion in the Western United States. Presbyterian Home Missions was published in New York City by the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church during in the 1870s-1880s. Beginning with Vol. XII, No. 1 (January 1883) the title changed from Presbyterian Home Missions to Presbyterian Home Missionary. Issued monthly, it is an illustrated booklet with articles pertaining to religious living and community events. Content Description +/-This collection consists four Protestant publications:
Church review: There are 21 issues of the Church review in Box 1 of this collection. They date from November 18, 1894 (Vol. 2, No. 47) to December 29, 1895 (Vol. 4, No. 1). Of special interest is the last issued held in this collection which is an historical edition, including extensive lists of area churches and their leadership in 1895--churches such as First Congregational Church and Plymouth Congregational Church (organized 1892 in Salt Lake City); and names of Protestant leaders (often with photographic images) such as Miss Maud Smith (Christian Endeavor Society), Rev. S.E. Wishard, and educators R.G. McNiece and Emma J. McVicker. Issues of the The Church review have been digitized and are linked within the collection inventory section of this guide. Kinsman: There are 15 issues of the Kinsman in Box 2 of this collection. They date from June 1, 1897 (Vol. 1, No. 1) to August 20, 1898 (Vol. 2, No. 11). The first 4 issues were issued monthly; after that they were issued weekly. The first issue has an article by Rev. S.E. Wishard ("Truthing it in Love"), other articles entitled "The Meaning of Citisenship", "The Graeco-Turkish War", "The Waste of Drink", and includes Utah photographs of Castle Gate, Echo Canyon, and Logan Canyon. The second issue has anti-Mormonism articles, "The Christian Endeavorers' Attack", and "Sheldon Jackson College, Salt Lake City", an article with an image of the proposed college building, its origin and prospects, and a list of the Board of Trustees. Additional issues list local Protestant churches, their minister's names, addresses, and when services are held. Pacific Christian Advocate: There are 7 issues of this publication in the collection (Box 2, Folder 16) published in Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California. Three issues bear the earlier title Pacific Christian Advocate (January 1929 and undated), and 4 issues under a newer title, The Christian Advocate, Pacific Edition.
